If someone told you there are ways to keep yourself recession proof regardless of how badly the economy is going, what would you say?

"Impossible." "You must be kidding!"

The barrage of negative media can certainly make it look that way.

As I write, the world is nervously anticipating another GFC, Europe is in crisis, and ordinary Americans have taken to the streets in a movement called Occupy Wall Street, to vent their frustrations over financial problems.

I want to offer two key thoughts on how to survive a recession.

First, the recession is just part of a cycle.

Ebb/Flow. Peak/Trough. Boom/Bust.

The economy will have its ups and downs. Right now, it may be near or at rock bottom, but it will not always be so.

Think back to past crises. 2008. Asian economic crisis. Dot-com bubble. Wall Street crash of 1929.

What about the years in between?

Wouldn't you agree that on the whole, there are more good years than bad?

So take a longer term view and know that things will eventually change for the better.

Second, you always have choice.

You have more power than you think. You have the ability to change the way things are, including the way you think and feel about them.

Here are five ways to prosper in your business, income, investing, wellbeing and relationships when the economy is down.

Five Ways To Recession Proof Everything That Matters

  1. Recession Proof Your Business

Is there such a thing as a recession proof business?

My hairdresser swears there is. She says the beauty industry is not affected at all by what's going on in the economy, because people want to look good all the time, whether or not they have the money for it.

If you are a business owner, a recession can be a gift, a great opportunity for you to stand out from the competition.

While other businesses are shrinking and playing it safe, you are thinking of how to serve even more customers while taking care of the ones you already have.

For instance. Why limit yourself to your postcode when you can put your business in front of millions of individuals and organizations around the world with a few clicks?

People have needs and they want solutions to these needs. They want to know how they can live more healthily and productively. Less stressful and more fulfilling ways to work and live. Tips on how to improve their homes and property values.

How do you map your product or service to your customers' needs so perfectly that your business comes up on page one when they Google their problem?

Give Your Customers What They Want: this is the nutshell secret to building a recession proof business online.

Make it a lifelong habit to help others get more value in their life and work, combine this with the best business building skills, and you will have the foundation of a recession proof business.

  2. Recession Proof Your Income
  3. One of the things you need to keep at the front of your mind is that a job does not confer financial security.

I'm not saying "Don't get a job" or "You should be a business owner". Every person is unique and what's right for you may not be right for someone else.

I'm saying (and this is particularly relevant when the economy is in recession) that your ability to create an income and live well should not be tied solely to your ability to get a job.

Because if it did, what happens if through no fault of your own, you can't find a job?

    Recession proof your income.

Be aware that when you are desperate and under pressure, you're more likely to get sucked into questionable Get Rich Quick schemes. Stay away from anything that sounds like you're getting something for nothing. Scams work because they appeal to our fear and greed. Don't make financial decisions when you haven't got a clear head!

    And another thing.

Just because you read something online doesn't make it true. Use your wisdom and research skills to sift truth from falsehood. Ask yourself: What's in it for me? What's in it for them?

In my opinion, the only ethical and sustainable way to make money online is to add real value to other people's lives.

Make ethical decision making the core of your business.

Make sure your product or service really helps someone solve a problem or improve their life in a measurable way.

Showing your mate a quality health product that can give them better health is one way. Trying to lure or harrass someone into joining your recruiting network is not.

Recession proof your income. With integrity.

  4. Recession Proof Your Mind
  5. If you've been putting off your reading, it's time to hit the library or bookstore. The self-improvement shelf is a great place to start. Recession proof your mind by feeding it with truth, excellence, passion and inspiring stories of achievement.

You may not agree with everything you read. That is a good thing. Have faith in your critical thinking skills. Use them to find those pearls which add to the quality of your thinking and living.

    Recession proof your thoughts.

    When we are tired,
we are attacked by ideas we conquered long ago.

    Nietzsche

If money worries are spilling over into the rest of your life and you feel like you're stuck in neutral, maybe it's worth talking to a life coach. A life coach is someone with whom you can safely explore, discuss and learn self-confidence tips, strategies to manage change and ways to protect your mental and emotional health during times of stress. Coaching can help you uncover, acknowledge and validate your own inner wisdom, and give you practical ways to move towards your goals.

Just wanting something is not enough. You have to be willing to do whatever it takes. If you want great results, you must show up every day and do the work consistently.

As author Irvin D. Yalom puts it, "Good ideas, even ideas of power, are rarely sufficient in a single shot: repeated doses are necessary."

Is your anxiety work related? Get career advice from a qualified career counselor or career coach. Career counseling provides a safe and neutral environment in which you can explore your career options and assess whether this is the best time to make a career change.

"Be fearful when others are greedy,
and greedy when others are fearful."

    Warren Buffett

  6. Recession Proof Your Investing
  7. The wisdom of the world's richest man makes good financial sense. You make money by buying low and selling high. In others, you do the opposite of what most people are doing.

Property investment experts counsel likewise. The time to make money is when you buy. To buy at the right price, you have to do your due diligence so you buy at or below fair market value.

  8. Recession Proof Your Relationships
  9. Relationships with loved ones can come under tremendous strain over money matters.

Suppose your child's best mate's father has lost his job.

Although he can't articulate it, your child may be feeling the effects of his friend's anxiety. He may also worry that his own family might be next in line.

This may be a good time to sit down with your child and introduce him to the complexities of life, starting with "What is a recession?"

You'll be amazed at how much you discover together, and more importantly, how working for a common cause helps your family to grow in unity and understanding.

Use this time to reaffirm to your spouse that you love them and value what they are doing for the family. Talk about ways the family can get through the financial crisis together. Every person values honest, heartfelt communication from their partner.

If your spouse is keen to explore ways to make money from home, this could a great time to explore what's available.

Many stay-home mums have discovered home-based business and home-based jobs that offer a practical solution to the problem of how to survive a recession when jobs are scarce.

    Conclusion

So is the recession cause for depression, or is it the forerunner of better things?

As Stephen Covey says, there is a gap between a stimulus and its response. In that gap lies your power to choose.

How will you choose to respond so that you and yours thrive in a recession?
